IT IS an understatement that Montana is not a major media center. It’s what many would call distinctly off the beaten track. For years it was the home to the smallest network television affiliate in the country, an NBC station in Miles City that was strictly a ma and pa affair. They took turns operating the camera and appearing on the air. One of the station’s most memorable moments occurred when a candidate for Congress showed up a little early for the afternoon public affairs show. Ma was running the camera and pa was doing a puppet show for kids. Pa broke off the puppet show and, still using the puppet, waved the candidate For the next 30 minutes, the candidate — who you’ll be relieved to know wasn’t elected — allowed himself to be interviewed by the puppet.
